Supervision of psychology trainees is the process of teaching
and guiding therapists-in-training as they treat clients in clinical
training settings. The supervisee meets weekly with his or her supervisor,
who has a license from the appropriate licensing board and additional
training in supervision. The supervisor retains primary responsibility for
the treatment provided by the trainee, co-signs any legal records concerning
the treatment, supports and challenges the trainee, offers suggestions,
techniques, and examination of clinical material that the trainee presents
in discussing cases with the supervisor.
Three psychologists at the Center for Culture and Diversity are able to provide supervision to psychologist trainees and interns, MFT interns, and LCSW interns. External supervision is available for formal training settings where therapist and social work graduate students receive their training. Doctoral students in psychology programs are required to receive primary supervision from licensed clinical psychologists.
